Week 2: Wake Lazarus Wake
John 11:38-39 NLT
38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.
But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”
In John 11:39, Jesus tells the people to roll away the stone in front of Lazarus’ tomb. The first reply is from Martha, and she pleads with the Lord that Lazarus has been dead for four days and by now there is a stench. Jesus’ reply to her is, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” Have you ever wondered why Jesus didn’t just miraculously make the stone move out of the way like it did on the day He was resurrected? Perhaps it was because this stone represented death and a place of unbelief. According to Martha, Lazarus can’t be revived now. He has already started to smell. He’s past the point of resurrection. Yet Jesus said, “Take away the Stone” and with a loud voice said, “Lazarus, Come Forth!” The stone had to be moved by man. They had to smell the stench as they moved the stone. They had to see his lifeless body lying there. They had to hear Jesus say, “Lazarus, Come Forth!” In verse 42, it says it had to be done so that the people may believe that God had sent Jesus.
Here are some questions for us to ask ourselves:
1. What is the stone that has kept you in hiding? Is it fear? Is it shame? Is it unbelief? What keeps you bound and holds you so tightly that you are unable to move when God says move?
2. Is there a lie that you are believing that says you are beyond saving?
Here is what Jesus is asking back to us, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
Allow your faith to rise up and believe God that He will do what He said He will do! He always meets us at our point of faith and if we would just choose faith in all of our circumstances, we would see the glory of God be revealed! Wake Lazarus Wake!
